Warner Rally
This Tuesday, a spirited crowd of 200 Arlington Baseball Coalition supporters demonstrated outside the Arlington County Board offices at Courthouse Plaza prior to the Board's last scheduled meeting until September 13. The demonstration featured the public debut of "NIMBY," a chicken-suited character dubbed the "unofficial mascot of the Arlington County Board."
An enthusiastic group of baseball fans greeted Governor Warner as he made his first scheduled public appearance in Arlington County since his Tuesday comments. The Governor encouraged baseball fans to "keep fighting" as he autographed several baseballs for the fans.
Warner: It's Baseball's Time to Pitch
WASHINGTON - Major League Baseball needs to pitch to Virginia now that ballpark locations in Arlington have been pulled from consideration for a relocation team. "I'm frustrated with Major League Baseball. They keep, kind of, moving the finish line - when the process is going to be complete," Virginia Gov. Mark Warner said on WTOP's Ask the Governor program Tuesday. "If they keep stringing out process, there may be no suitor left at the end of day. And, baseball will have basically shot itself in the foot or other parts of its body by not moving more aggressively and partnering with a community," Warner said. Tired of waiting for MLB, the Arlington County Board asked the Virginia Ballpark Authority not to consider three proposed ballpark sites in the county. "I understand Arlington County's frustration with the process. I think we've all been frustrated with the process," Warner said. "I still believe Northern Virginia is the best site." But Warner says there may be a way for baseball to "reopen" the door to with Arlington. For a ballpark proposal to move forward, Warner says, "Baseball needs to show its hand. Baseball need to say Northern Virginia is the best location." Warner says unlike other cities, Virginia already has more than 90 percent of the financing needed for a ballpark. "The days of 100 percent financed ballparks are gone." |
